About me

I'm an astronomer investigating how stars and planets came to be. I was directing the Calar Alto Observatory before becoming a professor of stellar astrophysics at the University of Vienna.

Alves Lab

Welcome to
Alves Lab, a research group on Star and Planet formation. We are currently investigating how large clouds of diffuse "dark" gas form, evolve, and sometimes collapse to become stars. Our group uses mainly near-infrared and radio techniques on large telescopes at the Atacama desert and in Space.

Topics of research

  • Molecular cloud structure
  • The origin of the Initial Mass Function (IMF)
  • Formation and collapse of dense cores
  • The origin of massive stellar clusters
  • Star and planet formation across the Universe
  • Life in Universe
